Khalil Mack Injury Update: Bears full-back brought into IR with season-ending surgery

The Bears won’t have their best defensive player for the rest of the 2021 campaign.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport reported on Friday that defender Khalil Mack will undergo foot surgery at the end of the season after the team placed him on the bench injured.

After both Mack and defender Danny Trevathan suffered injuries, who will be out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, full-back Cassius Marsh has been moved to the reserve team.

Mack had missed the previous two games through injury after a quick start to the 2021 season. In his first seven games, he counted 19 combined tackles – 15 solos, four assists – with six sack hits. In those games, the Bears let the 49ers beat the season-high 49ers 467 yards in a 33-22 loss and 280 yards in a 29-27 loss to the Steelers.

The passing process experienced a significant drop in Class ProFootballFocus, as it posted 52.1 vs. 49ers and 61.7 vs. Steelers, the season’s third-lowest and lowest tiers. Even missing those two games, Mack was second on the team with six covers and with his seven QBs.

Trevis Gibson has seen a spike in scoring in his last three games and will play a big role in filling the void left by Mack. After posting only 18 snaps in Week 6, Gibson tallied 54 at Week 7, 45 at Week 8 and 40 at Week 9, according to ProFootballFocus.

According to ProFootballFocus, Mack received a score of 74 as a pass and an overall score of 73.5.

Mack’s injury will see him play the fewest games in a single season of his career. In his first three seasons with the Bears, he missed just two games, both coming in 2018, and he played all 64 games with the Raiders during his tenure in Oakland.

The Bears will participate in a number of matches to test their defenses. They face the Crows, who have the eighth most yards per play at 5.9, in Week 11 and face the Cardinals, also drawing with the Crows at 5.9, in Week 13, with the match with the Lion separating the top two crimes.
