Kia EV9 2024 electric SUV launched with 800V charging, future V2G

Kia on Tuesday revealed full details for its upcoming EV9 electric SUV — including a Level 3 driver assistance system and a digital store that will service feature upgrades via network for an additional fee.

The brand says it’s targeting more than 336 miles of mileage for rear-wheel drive versions of the EV9, with 800-volt charging capabilities allowing for a 15-minute charge time to get back 149 miles. Both figures are for the European WLTP cycle; though the way Kia’s other E-GMP ratings have been translated, that suggests an EPA cycle is likely to hit the predicted 300-mile mark in at least one version.

Two different battery packs are offered in the lineup. The base package of 76.1 kwh is offered only in the Standard rear-wheel drive model, while the all-wheel drive and long-distance versions have the 99.8 kWh package.

Kia says the Standard model hits 62 mph in 8.2 seconds in the more powerful version, producing 214 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the Long Range version Rear-wheel drive, 201 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, takes 9.4 seconds. All-wheel drive versions are significantly faster. With 379 hp and 443 lb-ft, they can accelerate to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds. With the additional Boost feature offered through the Kia Connect Store, it can accelerate to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds faster, with torque boosted to 516 lb-ft.

The Kia Connect store itself is new to the EV9. Unlike the EV6, the EV9 has full over-the-air update capabilities. But through the app store, owners will be able to purchase additional features and services on demand — such as future Xe-to-Grid capabilities, Kia said. Initial models will offer Truck (V2L) capabilities up to 3.7 kW, allowing the vehicle to power camping gear, accessories, etc.

Measuring 197.2 inches long, 78.0 inches wide and 69.1 inches high, on a 122.0-inch wheelbase, the EV9 fits into midsize petrol SUVs like the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlanderand Kia’s own Telluride—as well as Rivian R1S. Kia plans to offer 19, 20 and 21-inch wheels, depending on the version or option. Wheels can change the way the entire configuration of a vehicle looks, so be prepared for the EV9 to come in a variety of styles and uses—towing up to 5,000 pounds, for example.

While there’s certainly plenty of frontal space to push through the air, the EV9 has an impressive aerodynamic coefficient of just 0.28. That’s thanks to the sculpted underbody panels that are convex at the front and concave at the rear. The aerodynamic wheels as well as the air curtain integrated in the front bumper also help.

Kia says the EV9 will introduce the brand’s Highway Driving Pilot system, which harnesses 15 sensors, including two flap units. Along with that, it is capable of “intelligent, proactive, real-time assistance” in a variety of conditions plus taking on the role of the driver in some conditions, allowing the driver to “temporarily quit driving a vehicle”.

In addition to that system, the EV9 also offers remote parking assistance and a full range of active safety features. There is also a second generation digital key system that allows smartphones to be identified even when they are in a handbag. And depending on the version, you can get a 14-speaker Meridian audio and massage chair.

But it goes beyond that as there are four different configurations of the second row available, including a three-seat bench, a recliner (reclining) and a pair of seats that swivel to the side (for access) or to the rear to create favorable conditions. a meeting or relaxing space. As Kia said, those in the third row will get cup holders and points.

EV9 also recognizes Kia’s Sustainability Vision is outlined in 2021, with a variety of plant-based ingredients made from corn, sugarcane and natural oils. The company plans to increase the percentage of recycled plastic to 20% of all plastic by 2030.

And in this age of Simplified EV with limited build combinations, Tesla style, Kia seems to be going in a different direction, towards more appearance options, more color combinations and more personalization opportunities. Kia suggests that there will be a variety of them — including a sporty GT-Line model. The interior, for instance, is offered in six different color combinations, and the available Lighting Patterns feature allows you to use the space previously thought of as a grille for your own lighting signature.
