“King Richard,” “Tick, Tick… Boom!” ACE Top Editors Eddie Award – The Hollywood Reporter
Edited by Pamela Martin King Richardand Myron Kerstein and Andrew Weisblum for Clap, Clap… Boom!, topped the 72nd Motion Picture Editors of America’s ACE Eddie Awards, winning Drama and Comedy respectively, at the Theater at the ACE Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. Organizers planned a reduced capacity in-person event while following COVID-19 safety protocols, and an after party at Clifton.
Martin topped a nominated field, including Úna Ní Dhonghaíle cho BelfastJoe Walker for Sand dunesTom Cross and Elliot Graham for There’s no time to die and Peter Sciberras for The power of the dog. In the Best Edited Comedy category, Kerstein and Weisblum were nominated, along with Tatiana S. Riegel for CruellaHank Corwin cho Don’t look upAndy Jurgensen for Licorice pizzamore French Dispatchbrings in a second nomination for Weisblum.
King Richard, Tick, tick… Boom !, Dune, The Power of the Dog and Don’t Look Up was nominated for an Oscar in the field of film editing. In four of the past 10 years, the winner of the Eddie Award for Best Edited Drama has won an Oscar in this category.
During the evening, Jeremy Milton won the Eddie Best Edited Animated Feature Film for his work on Disney’s Encanto. The animated feature category was introduced in 2010. Since then, Eddie’s winning film has mirrored the recipient of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, except once (in 2015, when Lego movies won Eddie, and Big Hero 6 Oscar winners).
Summer of the soul editor Joshua L. Pearson won the Eddie Award in the documentary competition. For seven of the past 10 years, this category winner has gone on to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
Among the series winners are the editors of Kevin Can F**k Himself, Mare of Easttown and Succession.
The presentation was spirited and strongly opposed to the controversial decision to reformat the Academy Awards in eight categories, including editing, presented before publication. broadcast live and edited into a program.
Though he didn’t specifically mention the Oscars, ACE president Kevin Tent won a standing ovation in his welcome, as he insisted, “Today is all about the editorial. pellets. We know our value… and any CEO, director or value maker knows this.”
Host DJ Lance was more direct, talking about TV plans as the audience booed loudly. He then laughed as he quipped, “Who would they take to cut it?”
Emilio Estavez presented the Career Achievement Award to Oscar winner Richard Chew (Star Wars), and remember watching Chew receive the Oscar live during that 1978 broadcast. Accepting the award to a standing ovation, Chew said, “These are fractured and fragile times. Probably [with movies]we can [provide] entertain and send a message… to emphasize our common humanity. ”
Debbie Allen presents the Career Achievement Award to Lillian E. Benson (Look at the prize). “I hope for a safe, secure and inclusive world and a safe, secure and inclusive industry,” said Benson, the first woman of color inducted into ACE. She also received a standing ovation.
Chloé Zhao was also present to present the ACE Golden Eddie to the Sundance Institute and the founding senior director of artist programs, Michelle Satter. Sundance, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, offers emerging filmmakers “a safe place to be vulnerable,” says Zhao.
