The Sacramento Kings reported deciding who would be their next head coach.
Former All-Star defense commentator of color, Mark Jackson, has been widely reported as the forerunner to land a gig in Sacramento last week, but he’s also rumored to be a rival for vacancies with the Los Angeles Lakers. Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer reported Last week, in addition to Jackson and Brown, the Kings also spoke with former Orlando Magic head coach Steve Clifford.
Brown will take over a franchise that hasn’t made it to the knockouts yet since 2006, representing the longest drought in the NBA. Luke Walton led Sacramento for two consecutive 31-41 campaigns in 2019-20 and 2020-21, before being fired after starting 6-11 this season.
Alvin Gentry took over after Walton’s departure and went 24-41 for the rest of the run. Gentry was fired in April.
The new hire is in his sixth season on the bench of Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr and will complete the team’s playoffs before taking over his new club, by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. The Dubs are currently leading 2-1 in the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal series against the Memphis Grizzlies.
Prior to joining Golden State, Brown had stints as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers, compiling a Regular season record 347-216 and 47-36 points in the playoffs. Brown was named 2008-09 NBA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cavs to a 66-16 record.
