Kyle Shanahan was unaware of Jimmy Garoppolo’s commercial interests
The San Francisco 49ers have previously made it clear that 2021 rookie Trey Lance will replace veteran Jimmy Garoppolo in their starting midfield position. San Francisco then seemed to confirm Garoppolo’s time with the organization would soon end when the club release a depth chart on Tuesday had the 30-year-old listed as the fourth series option after Lance and backups Nate Sudfeld and Brock Purdy.
Every David Bonilla of the 49ers WebZone, head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked later in the day about Garoppolo’s condition on the depth chart as he continues to recuperate from shoulder surgery in March.
“He is not in meetings. He doesn’t do all that stuff,” Shanahan talks about his old QB1. “So he’s just doing what I said he’s doing. I think if he’s on the depth charts, it’s because you have to be. I think all 90 people are. on our list all do. Actually we have 91 people.”
Shanahan was also asked about any potential commercial discussions that interested parties have had regarding Garoppolo’s services.
Shanahan replied: “I believe that goes on with his agents, but nothing that I have heard of.
At the beginning of the day, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk wrote that Garoppolo’s $24.2 million base salary for the upcoming season will only be guaranteed if he remains on the 49ers’ active roster as of 4pm ET on Jan. September 10, a day before San Francisco opens its campaign at the Chicago Bears. Unless an opponent loses their starting midfield in pre-season, most would expect the Niners to eventually have to release Garoppolo ahead of the deadline that Florio mentioned.
Garoppolo is not expected to play for San Francisco in any exhibition matches.
