Laguna Woods, California, Church Shooting Leaves One Dead, Four Critically Wounded
In another church shooting, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday that multiple people were shot at Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods, California.
An Orange County sheriff’s Twitter account stated that the suspect was taken into custody and that a “possibly related” weapon was recovered. Police first received a call about the shooting at 1:26 p.m. local time.
“We are working to get the information out as quickly as possible. We ask for patience as this event unfolds,” the sheriff’s office added.
As of the early hours of Sunday evening, one person was dead and four others were seriously injured – one with minor injuries. The victims are all adults and are being transported to the hospital, the sheriff’s office said.
Former Orange County Fire Department speak on Twitter that its staff was “on the scene and treated and transported multiple patients.” It is still too early to infer a motive for the shooting.
A spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office could not be immediately reached for comment.
According to the city of Laguna Woods website, the majority of its residents live in retirement communities; Laguna Woods Village is the largest village by far, with more than 18,000 residents across thousands of apartments.
The website of the Geneva Presbyterian Church has a stated mission to foster “a holistic congregation that worships, learns, connects, gives and serves together”.
News of the shooting broke out as the country was still reeling from an attack on Saturday in Buffalo, New York in which an apparent white supremacist shoot 13 people10 people died.
