In one recording, the teacher called the students “complete and complete idiots”.
RICHMOND, Texas – Lamar Consolidated ISD’s Harry Wright Middle School has been open for less than a year, and a freshman teacher recently told students she’s had enough.
“If I have to keep dealing with kids who are completely and completely goofy, I’m done,” the teacher said in an audio recording shared with KHOU 11 News and on social media.
The unnamed teacher was heard complaining about students and venting about work.
“I want to be fired at this point,” the teacher said. “I’m really going to hurt myself if I have to keep coming here.”
She added that she would not help students if they were having difficulty.
“I’ve never dealt with children so horrible that if they fell into the river, I would just let them go,” she said.
Many parents and others reacted to the teacher’s words with opinions ranging from outrage to sympathy.
“It’s ridiculous,” said parent Lucy Martinez. “Really if she doesn’t like what she does why be a teacher?”
“We should never be in a place where we let our personal feelings get to that point,” said Zeph Capo, president of the American Federation of Teachers of Texas. “Especially in front of the kids.”
Capo did not know the individual teacher in question but said many have been emotionally traumatized amid the pandemic and related challenges.
Capo said: “Right now, it’s time for grace. “You know, it looks like she needs to get out and get some rest.”
Our efforts to reach out to teachers have been unsuccessful.
However, Lamar CISD issued the following statement:
On Wednesday night (January 12), we learned of a viral video on social media where a Wright Middle School teacher was making disturbing comments.
Of course, we take this matter very seriously and are actively investigating the situation. On Wednesday night (January 12), the employee involved was known not to report to the campus and was placed on administrative leave on Thursday morning (January 13).
Parents trust us with their students every day and, unfortunately, one person’s actions have the potential to shatter that trust. That’s why it’s important to emphasize that the hard-working, dedicated staff at Wright Middle School work to create a place where all students feel included and valued. , and comments made in the video do not reflect the entire campus.
