Lamborghini Huracán STO Road Test | Dead metal in the form of vehicles


Malibu, Calif. – If heavy metal music was a car, it would be Lamborghini Huracán STO. This is not your factory Lamborghini. It does not have all-wheel drive. Floors and doors are basically bare carbon. It has an intricate clamshell top/hood that you can open manually with a plastic prong – underneath it, there’s barely room for a racing helmet. Flipping the lid for the start/stop button is normal for Lamborghini, but that doesn’t make it any less dramatic. Tapping the steering wheel mode tab to “Trofeo” opens the car the STO was designed to be. Lamborghini says the “STO” mode is for “fun on winding roads,” but after trying both, it’s hard to imagine not wanting the absolute animal Huracán to become a Trofeo. The reciprocating nature of California canyon roads shows how focused and capable this STO is. Compared to usual Huracan EVO, it has wider grooves, stiffer bushings all around, unique anti-roll bars and individual damper adjustment. From the first corner, it is clear that this Lamborghini is meant for serious business. It combines high altitude and lightness that I didn’t expect. But beyond this airy flexibility, the entire structure is simply glued to the runway in a way that feels comfortable and uncompromising. The word that summarizes it most succinctly is control. Driving within its limits on public roads, the STO gives the driver a feeling of complete control and control of the machine. I, the driver, am not a race car driver, but Huracan is making cornering on a 631hp mid-engine supercar a completely doable task.

Perhaps the eye-catching aero package has something to do with how jammed (as the British would say) this car is. Aviation design “Cofango” represents the air duct-filled front hood, fenders, low spoiler and air intake bumper – all of these often separate and individual body panels are a large, impressive part of the STO. The rear fender has a NACA air intake. Its rear engine cover has an air vent that improves engine cooling. Shark fins on the engine cover improve wing efficiency after cornering. The point is, even with all that force, the STO is as playful and lively with its rear end when you want it to be. Just like a regular airline package isn’t good enough for an STO, a brake neither does the package. On the extreme road car scale, STO has a guide to the bottom. There are others you can choose from, like 911 GT3 CHEAPS, Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series and the LT series from McLaren. And while most of that looks like it’s special in wind tunnels, Huracan STO took the cake because of the most extreme look of them all. If that’s what you’re after, the STO will deliver. The limitations of buying a typical Lamborghini – weight, AWD, great performance for the day – don’t really exist in STO either. If you happen to have $333,633 (STO starting price) then you need to have one, have fun with the attention and even more fun to drive it as if it were oriented.
