Larkin refused an 8-year, $8 million extension from Red Wings
Last weekend, it was report that the Red Wings have made a new offer for the center Dylan Larkin as they look to lock down their captain for a long term extension.
Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press report that the offer has a maximum term of eight years and yields an AAV of $8 million. Since there has been no announcement of an extension at this time, it can be said that the offer has been declined.
The proposal represents a significant jump from the $6.1 million Larkin is currently receiving in a deal that is due to expire in June. However, St. James points to an 8-year extension of $73.2 million ($9.15 million AAV) that Mathew Barzal signed with the Islanders as a reasonable comparison from Larkin’s camp.
If that’s the case, the two sides may be trying to close the $1.15 million-per-season gap. While a deal has yet to be struck, the 26-year-old doesn’t believe there is any tension in the negotiations:
There doesn’t seem to be any hard feelings, it’s just the way it’s going. With Steve, I don’t really expect anything else. It was very professional and we had a lot of conversations about the team and certain things that happen in a season with the boys or whatever that might happen. That’s quite the status quo.
