Negotiators in Montreal have finalized a deal to prevent and reverse the destruction of nature by 2030, as the COP15 negotiations enter their final official date.
An announcement made early Monday morning said the countries gathered at the biodiversity summit had agreed to four goals and 23 targets.
The goals include protecting 30% of the world’s land, water and seas by 2030, as well as mobilizing, by 2030, at least $200 billion a year in biodiversity-related funding. nationally and internationally from all sources, both public and private.
There is also a commitment to reduce subsidies deemed harmful to nature by at least $500 billion by 2030, while developed countries commit to providing developing countries with at least $20 billion each. year by 2025 and $30 billion per year by 2030.
As the conference nears its final official date, Canada’s Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Steven Guilbeault said some countries are still asking for more ambitious digital targets, while other countries are still asking for more ambitious digital targets. The new agreement is called the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework after the official host cities in China and Canada.
