Latest news on Ukraine-Russia border crisis: Live updates

French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday called for a cessation of military operations in the Donbas region of Ukraineafter both the Ukrainian armed forces and the separatists who control parts of eastern Ukraine spoke of fresh shelling.

“In a context where Russian military pressure does not wane, where instability increases, where bombing in the contact zone continues, we call first for a halt to military actions.” this and de-escalate it quickly,” Macron said at the European Union-Africa Summit in Brussels. “Very clear, yes [military] actions multiplied. These actions, in our view, must be stopped as they are contrary to the agreements reached, the ceasefires that have been respected so far and all the parties concerned have recently reiterated their their support. “

Macron said that teams from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) will have to clarify the events of the past few hours and days.

In an earlier statement, the OSCE said it was “aware that Russia was intending to create a pretext to justify an invasion” into Ukraine and had received reports detailing “Russian efforts intended to fabricate “Ukrainian provocations” and shape a public narrative that would justify a Russian invasion. “

“Starting a few weeks ago, we received information that the Russian government is planning to carry out a fabricated attack by the Ukrainian army or security forces against the sovereign territory of Russia or against Russian-speaking people in separatist-controlled territory, to justify military action against Ukraine,” the OSCE statement stated.

“We must resolutely refute misinformation about Ukraine’s ‘escalation’ that found no evidence in the reports of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission,” the statement added.

Macron echoed remarks by other NATO allies, noting that he had seen “no evidence of a Russian withdrawal at this stage.”

“I welcome the statements of President (Vladimir) Putin, but I believe that if we want to be a reliable partner, it is good that the actions must be consistent with the statements and therefore they I wanted to have specific elements behind those statements,” he told reporters.

“We call for a constructive reopening of negotiations, because we continue to believe that this situation can be resolved through dialogue,” Macron said.

He also noted that the “next few hours” will “see close coordination between our European and US allies” who will issue an “appropriate response” by the end of the day.

“I have heard the words of the President of Russia. Now we need to act, and we need to work with precision and commitment to stabilize and then de-escalate the situation with the cooperation of Russia, Mr. Macron said.
