LeBron James of Wrists shows off a secret Rolex
Welcome to Clock of the weekwhere we’ll track the rarest, wildest and most coveted watches spotted on celebrities.
The end of the NBA season is upon us, but the off-category Rolex season has only just begun. Last weekend, before “LeBron James of legsBringing him back to the floor, James wore one of the wildest Rolex watches in the brand’s history, the gold watch “Tiger’s Eye” Cosmograph Daytona.
First launched in 2018, the design of the sparkling gold watch evokes large stripes. Or it does for me, at least; it is also known as the “Rorschach Daytona Trial.”). When you see such a wild Rolex, it’s safe to assume it’s not an official release. Rolexes come in grades: there are general releases, available to anyone to buy, and there are also releases that have been announced but not in the catalog. The new “jigsaw” Day-Date, while generating a lot of heat and conversation, is technically outside the category. Click on the Rolex website to find it and you will find it empty. But there is another level of the watch buried even deeper. I saw them this week at Watches & Wonders—but obviously no photos.
Before being released to the market, “Tiger’s Eye” was kept under wraps. Rolex’s Secret Releases Are Often Its high gems pieces, featuring large quantities of diamonds and other precious jewelry, sometimes arranged in quirky patterns. This year, new items outside the category are a Yacht-Master set with less than 5 carats of diamonds on the bezel and a pair of platinum Daytona. It probably won’t be long until we see these — most likely on LeBron James’ wrist.
Hermès Arceau L’Heure De La Lune by Ben Affleck
Affleckaissance is complete. He’s back with Jennifer Lopez, starring in a highly-anticipated Nike movie, and there’s no recent photo of him vaping, looking like a failure. Interestingly, this lucky streak seems to start with a watch: the one Franck Muller Lopez gave him in the early 2000s and that watch he took it out of storage when the couple rekindled their romance. Now, Affleck is wearing another very nice watch, this one by Hermès. Arceau uses two rotating discs, one for the time and one for the date.
Hugh Grant’s Panerai Luminor
Often, Panerai’s giant watches are associated with the biggest action stars of the 21st century, from Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarznegger to Dwyane Johnson. So it’s a little funny to see Hugh Grant, the king of romantic comedies, in designer clothes this week. Then again, the big and in-charge Luminor makes more sense when you consider his latest role, in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
Anthony Mackie’s Montblanc Chronograph
Montblanc has pretty seriously rebranded its watches over the past few years; Mackie has an artifact from before that time. This mid-2010s TimeWalker is Montblanc’s version of an oversized sport watch. It is equipped with a chronograph, large numerals and a 43 mm case, leaning towards the very large watch size.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Duoface Calendar Watch by Nicholas Hoult
It’s Reverso and JLC’s 60th Anniversary worked hard on new releases at Watches & Wonders this week—a new version that includes a tourbillon appearing on both sides of the watch, famously reversible. Hoult is wearing a special edition Reverso that was released last year and it is extremely photogenic. Break your little violin, but sometimes luxury watches struggle under flash: the beautiful navy blue dial, for example, can be turned into untextured black holes . This Reverso is silver sunlight However, the finish is ready for close-up shots. Even the dark blue sky of the lunar cycle complication somehow has a bright turquoise tint. These are important things to consider when you’re wearing someone like Hoult’s shoes.
