Leonardo DiCaprio Praises Lula’s Brazilian Election Winner – The Hollywood Reporter

Leonardo DiCaprio took to social media to praise Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s victory in Sunday’s Brazilian presidential election.

The Oscar-winner and committed environmentalist is a keen observer of the close race between incumbent right-wing Jair Bolsonaro and former president Lula as the campaign’s key issue is the future of the rainforest. Amazon region. Under Lula, deforestation in the Amazon has decreased markedly from its peak in the 1990s, however, Bolsonaro’s regime has stepped up exploitation and development of the area dubbed “the lungs of the earth”.

On Sunday, DiCaprio tweeted, “The results of the Brazilian election offer an opportunity to change the course of history, not just for Brazil and the Amazon, but for the whole world.”

Given Brazil’s central role in the fight against the climate crisis, some Hollywood celebrities have taken the unusual step of publicly supporting Lula in the presidential election. The likes of Jason Momoa, Mark Ruffalo, Mark Hamill and Barbara Streisand tweeted in support of Lula’s candidacy.

Hours before the election results were announced, Streisand tweeted, “The Brazilian election could decide if the Amazon rainforest is still the ‘lungs of the world’ or a place to make short-term profits. Our warming planet needs the Amazon not to be destroyed.”
