San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan specifically talked about hats. Like Bill Belichick with his hoodie, Shanahan is known for wearing flat-brimmed hats that make him look like someone who grew up surfing and skateboarding in Denver and possibly named his son after Lil Wayne. (Shanahan did both.) But it looks like one such hat, a rose-red truck hat with a postage stamp-sized 49ers logo, looks a lot like something you might pick up at the brewery. his local craft—and better known to fans as “Shanahat”—may be out of action this year.
“I have such beef with [the league] right now,” said Shanahan, speaking on Bay Area radio KNBR 680’s “Murph & Mac” airing on Wednesday. “It is an ongoing difficult problem. They won’t let me choose my own. They won’t let me wear any from one [previous] years, so I can’t wear, like, an older one. I have to wear the new sets they gave me this year. “
He goes on to say, “Unfortunately, I don’t like wearing any,” he said. (Like SFGate pointed out, who exactly “they” is is unclear.) “I don’t want to go too hard and get fined or anything but trust me, I’m upset about that.”
Usually the question of a coach’s headgear won’t be a big deal: very few NFL coaches seem to care much about what they wear. But Shanahan – who, at 42, is one of the younger coaches in the league – has tailored his hats with New Era, signed on as an official licensee. on the field for the NFL a few years ago. He detailed the above process podcast “Chris Simms Unbuttoned” in 2020, at which point the coach’s hat rotation has become something of a treat for the Niners’ fan base.
“The thing is, I never wear a hat to games because I don’t like the way hats work,” Shanahan said, adding that when he gets off work, he usually wears hats like the one he wears. he was in the interview. by the surf brand Hurley. “But when I went to the New Era and they asked why we didn’t wear them, I wore one like this, and they said, ‘Well, you can design one.’ So they turned the laptop upside down and let me design one. New Era has produced a wide range of hats specifically for Shanahan. Extras for sale in the Niners gift shop, where they quickly sold out. Shanahan has worn a few different hats since then, sometimes out of superstition, but certainly the league behind the curtain has licensing consistency to note.
