The Lewiston School Board voted unanimously on Monday to ban cell phones on campus for students in grades 8 through 8 and restrict phones outside the classroom to high school students.

Phones for students in kindergarten through 8th grade will be stored during the school day, except for those students determined to be “necessary for the health, safety of the student, or for educational purposes.”

Disciplinary actions will vary, from warnings to forfeiture in parent conferences to suspension or expulsion for more serious infractions.

Superintendent Jake Langlais says that removing cell phones from the learning environment removes a stressor for students, such as in situations where they are waiting for a text message.

“They live with a lot of anxiety that they may not have to live because they expect that quick return, and whether you understand it or not, that creates this new sense of anger,” says Langlais. “And when you’re trying to focus on things like math, it can get really difficult.”
