Lexus RX450h+ plug-in hybrid coming soon in Australia

Lexus will bring a plug-in hybrid version of it New RX SUV to Australia… but exactly when is unclear.

The RX450h+ plug-in hybrid (PHEV) was launched with the rest of the lineup in June 2022 and is now offered in overseas markets such as the United States. However, it is not part of the launch range for Australia.

“We will get the PHEV RX in Australia. For us at this point, it’s just the moment,” Lexus Australia CEO John Pappas told the media.

Mr Pappas said PHEV production is being prioritized for markets with strict carbon regulations, where strong sales of PHEVs and EVs can reduce manufacturers’ average emissions and potentially help them avoid heavy fines.

Lexus isn’t the only brand forced to wait for the latest electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles due to Australia’s relaxed emissions standards.

Volkswagen Group electric vehicles, for example, have been off-limits to our market as production is sent to markets like Europe and the US, and Kia Australia has struggled to get supplies. grant EV6 And Niro tram.

Mr Pappas confirmed Lexus will know more about when the RX PHEV will arrive in Australia in late 2023, suggesting it won’t be here until later this year or at best early 2024.

The plug-in RX offers the claimed 65 km electric range from the 18.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. It combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor mounted on the front axle and a motor on the rear axle for all-wheel drive.

Maximum power is 237kW and Lexus does not report maximum torque value. Same powertrain features in the smaller NX450h+ plug-in hybrid.

When it launches, the RX PHEV will use plug-in hybrid versions of the BMW X5 And X3with Audi Q5.

Along with plug-in hybrids, Lexus is preparing to expand its electric vehicle range downwards. An updated version of SUV UX300e is on its way to mid-year, and Bigger RZ SUV will land locally in May.

It’s part of a plan to have 80 percent of Lexus sales use some form of electric power – be it hybrid, plug-in hybrid or all-electric powertrain – by 2025. 50% of Lexus sales in Australia will be electrified by 2023.
