Leylah Fernandez defeated at the Adelaide tournament

Fifth seed Iga Swiatek of Poland beat Leylah Fernandez of Canada 6-1, 6-2 in Wednesday’s second round match at the Adelaide International Tennis Championships.

Swiatek, the defending champion, converted four of the nine saves in the game. Fernandez, 19, of Laval, Que., also committed five double fouls, compared to one by his Polish opponent.

It was the first professional meeting between the two even though Swiatek beat Fernandez in 2015 when both were juniors..

Swiatek, the 2020 French Open champion, controlled the opening set, registering two rounds of service in four opportunities. Fernandez made just 51% of the first serves (versus 76% for Swiatek) and also double fouled three times.

Swiatek has two aces in the match while Fernandez has one.

Fernandez, currently ranked 24th in the world, defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia 6-3, 6-4 in her first match. Swiatek opened with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Australia’s Daria Saville.
