Liberals say Iran appoints terrorism to national security agencies
OTTAWA –
The Liberals said national security agencies decide whether Canada should expand its terror list to include a branch of the Iranian military.
MPs passed a petition in 2018 to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.
The US has listed the group as a terrorist, but Canada has only listed a subset of the group.
Iranians are facing a violent human rights crackdown and the Conservatives have continued to call for the IRGC to be listed as a terrorist group.
But the Liberals said that adding to the list was “a careful, apolitical process carried out by Canada’s natural security agencies”.
Secretary of State Melanie Joly would not elaborate on why her government never followed through with the move.
