As all the leading press have explained, the Pixar movie Light year follow “real” Buzz Lightyear – means a movie version of the character Who inspired by toys from Pixar’s Toy Story franchise. Buzz is an adult Space Ranger on a furry mission to save his fellow Rangers from a dangerous world, so there are no toys in the movie. However, there is one character that was inspired by real-life toys: the robotic cat Sox, Buzz Lightyear’s personal companion.
Voiced by Kind dinosaur Directed by Peter Sohn, Sox is assigned to Buzz as a therapeutic aid after Buzz returns from a difficult mission in space. The robotic cat can perform complex mathematical calculations and hack computers, but also enjoys chasing lasers and rubbing Buzz’s paws. Directed by Angus MacLane told Polygon that Sox’s design eventually became deliberately simple, like a Robot toys in the 1990s than any high-tech, future sci-fi android companion.
“The Sox is like a toy, a simple cartoon toy,” says MacLane. “It is not a very convincing animal. But it’s doing the best it can. It’s a toy from the movie. It’s like a fancy action figure. I find [its] Limited motion is really funny as an animator, and it contrasts nicely with everything else in the movie. “
Another Sox toy-like feature? Its texture. Sox is neither metal nor plastic. He was suppressed, like Calico Critters or several types of Breyer Horses. As MacLane describes it, Sox’s texture is a glue sprayed onto vinyl, with some foam fabric attached.
“Flocking is funny. Seeing those seams is really fun,” laughs producer Galyn Susman. But as it turns out, that swarm texture also adds an interesting perk to a sci-fi world full of aliens. “It’s a fireproof material, because people put them in beds with children, and you don’t want something flammable!”
As for why Sox is a cat instead of any other animal companion, the answer is pretty simple: MacLane is a big cat.
“I think a helpful cat is funny, because they are usually not very helpful,” he said.
