Literally just let us rate Colin the Caterpillar Cakes. Nothing.

From Charlie to Cecil, Wiggles to Morris, the variety of Caterpillar cakes on the market can leave you a bit overwhelmed

There are Euros, Wimbledon, Grammys and BRITS, but no contest or awards ceremony keeps us on the edge of our seats like Colin the Caterpillar’s battle of pies. From Charlie to Cecil, Wiggles to Morris, the vast range of Caterpillar cakes on the market can be a bit overwhelming, so when we step in, the burden on the quest to crown the crown falls to one caterpillar and one moth. The only caterpillar is the ultimate prize winner- top of the shopping list for the birthday party. Last year saw the news dominated by many events, but one story that kept us hooked at every turn was the battle of the M&S caterpillars Colin and Aldi’s Cuthbert, and while sorry, we don’t could get an IRL Cuthbert to try (he’s been somewhat of an MIA ever since), we instead put 5 other Colins and Colin-doppelgängers to the taste test (fairy fair and all) to solve the problem. decide this war once and for all. Wrap yourself up, it’s a wild ride…

Wiggles the Caterpillar from Sainsbury’s

Price: £7 (Sainsbury’s Local)
Serve 14

First, we have the now-identified Wiggles from supermarket giant Sainsbury’s, the tagline ‘helping people eat better’ must have been written without tasting their version of Colin, because the Pretty harsh review. On the surface, Wiggles is very charismatic, with his patchwork, smiley face, and chocolate-colored button eyes giving him a classic look that’s hard to fault. Unfortunately when cutting into Wiggles’ body (sorry), the positives are a bit hard to spot, as on the surface the cake looks dry even at first glance.

The swirl of chocolate buttercream that forms an integral part of the caterpillar cake experience has been well received, with its beautiful texture and Betty Crocker-esque flavor, prompting Wiggles to rise by team estimates.

The dryness was confirmed on tasting, however a few sips later revealed some positives to boost our morale (and that of Sainsbury’s PR team). The swirl of chocolate buttercream that forms an integral part of the caterpillar cake experience has been well received, with its beautiful texture and Betty Crocker-esque flavor, prompting Wiggles to rise by team estimates. The chocolate outer shell is delicious but thin, which doesn’t help or hinder its evaluation but is worth it if you’re looking for a truly decadent caterpillar experience. Overall, it’s unfortunate that Wiggles never topped the charts due to his dry cake texture, but he certainly fought well and looking at it, he’s turned out to be a standout contender. .

Morris the Caterpillar from Morrisons

Price: £6
Serve 12

Morris scored very well at first, with the chocolate scent and beautiful buttercream swirls that helped him rise above Wiggles on first impressions. His thicker chocolate exterior is crafted to provide a more crunchy experience, adding an important textural element that seems to matter in the overall cake experience.

Since the cake itself somehow managed to weather the dryness of the Wiggles (imagine two days in an uncovered cake tin), Morris was unfortunately destined for the caterpillar graveyard.

Sponge’s flavor is also superior to Wiggles, as while still dry, his chocolate flavors are darker and more noticeable, contributing to a more decadent experience overall. One member of the team thinks his avocado ice cream is too sweet, but we’re here to ask if that’s really the case? Morris’ outer shell is covered with small eggs as part of his Easter celebration, which goes without saying that earns him extra marzipan points, however, how the cake itself If it gets past the Wiggles dryness (imagine two days in an uncovered pie), Morris is unfortunately destined for the caterpillar graveyard. 5 stars for the effort, M!

Colin the Caterpillar from M&S

Price: £7

After slicing, the cake will be noticeably crispier than its predecessors, with a great initial aroma and a nice chocolate topping ratio.

OG, the sole reason for this fight: we present Colin the Caterpillar from Marks and Spencer. Colin was the third contestant to be ranked, and let’s just say if you want a man you can rely on to always perform, that man is Colin.

After slicing, the cake will be noticeably crispier than its predecessors, with a great initial aroma and a nice chocolate topping ratio.

After slicing, the cake will be noticeably crispier than its predecessors, with a great initial aroma and a nice chocolate topping ratio. If there’s one thing Colin won’t do it’s disappointing, and from the first bite, it’s clear that his light, soft, and moist texture stands out from the rest. Now keep in mind that this was a blind taste test, however the team determined that only Colin could deliver richer flavors to this extent, and they were right! The balance between cake and buttercream is simply perfection, and we could spend some time on Colin’s shoes, undoubtedly the biggest and most flavorful. Colin’s case is covered in Smarties and his simple yet classic look is really no one can go wrong. M&S- you look great so far… This isn’t just any old caterpillar, this is a god class caterpillar.

Overall rating: 4/5

Cecil the Caterpillar from Waitrose

Price: £7
Serve 12

Colin has always been a tough act to follow, but can supermarket, Waitrose’s creme de la creme knock him out of the top spot? Introducing Cecil. Similar to Colin in appearance but clearly wider than the other caterpillars, Cecil is broad in stature and serves some serious face. With a pearl of white chocolate flowing all over the outer shell, a rich selection of colorful Smarties, and adorable icy eyes on her chocolate face, Cecil is a caterpillar that we are delighted with. meet.

Drier than the Sahara, at this point we’re wondering how hard it is to get moisture out of these caterpillars, and where is Cuthbert when you really need him?!

His chocolate shells are delicious and thick, giving the overall luxury birthday cake experience, however again problems are encountered when it comes to Cecil’s own cake. Drier than the Sahara, at this point we’re wondering how hard it is to get moisture out of these caterpillars, and where is Cuthbert when you really need him?! Cecil could certainly have done it with a more even cake to buttercream ratio to help alleviate some of this dryness, and for that reason Colin has so far stayed on top and shoulders of the rest.

Clyde the Caterpillar from Asda

Price: £6
Serve 12

Last but not least, and your last chance to outrun Colin on his quest to find the King, welcome the caterpillar Clyde from ASDA. Perhaps the most down-to-earth appearance thanks to his pale face, Clyde is slashed and perhaps the messiest person to serve.

To quote Dana Davis’ character in the ’90s romance Ten Things I Hate About You: “I know you can be overwhelmed and you can be overwhelmed, but do you ever just fall short? are not?” – Yes you can.

His buttercream has received some notable ‘oohs’ and ‘yums’, but with the lack of outer chocolate remaining on a slice in any given bite, buttercream alone is not enough to carry Lots and lots of noise for the overall experience. His edible toppings and sprinkles are a welcome touch and serve Clyde very well in the cosmetology department, but unfortunately the rest of the experience is neither here nor there. To quote Dana Davis’ character in ’90s romcoms Ten Things I Hate About You: “I know you can be overwhelmed and you can be overwhelmed, but have you ever just been overwhelmed?” – yes, yes, you can.

Overall rating: 2/5

So that’s the end of the caterpillars’ battle, and with a clear winner, we can’t help but wonder if we’re surprised by the outcome? If it’s not broken, don’t fix it, and you can rule the birthday cake kingdom forever, Colin!
