Police are warning the M6 will be closed for ‘some time’ following a lorry crash in Cheshire.

There’s five mile queues and delays of more than an hour following the smash on the northbound carriageway between junction 17 and 18 for Sproston Green.

According to the traffic monitoring service Inrix a lorry has veered off the road and gone up the grass verge.

Six fire engines are at the scene.

Diversions have been put in place.

North West Motorway Police tweeted; “Due to a police incident the M6 between j18 and j18 northbound will be closed for some time please find alternative routes.”

Highways England said: “This incident is causing delays of over 60 minutes above the normal travel time and 5 miles of congestion almost back to J16 near Barthomley.”

Shortly after 8am on Tuesday 7 September police were called to reports of a collision on the M6.

The incident on the northbound carriageway near to Sandbach involves an HGV which has collided with a bridge.

One person is believed to have sustained serious injuries.

As a result of the incident the carriageway is currently closed northbound between junctions 17 (Sandbach) and 18 (Middlewich).

The closure is expected to remain in place for several hours.

Local diversion are place but there are long delays and members of the public are advised to avoid the area if possible.

Updates will be provided when available.

All traffic is now being held southbound on the oposite side of the M6 due to a broken down vehicle.

National Highways reports this is causing delays of 45 minutes above the usual travel time and 5.6 miles of congestion on approach southbound.

Inrix reports: “All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident in the opposite direction on M6 Southbound between J18 A54 Middlewich Road (Middlewich / Holmes Chapel) and J17 A534 Old Mill Road ( Sandbach / Crewe).

“Lane one (of four) was closed until around 09:10 when traffic was stopped whilst the breakdown is attended to and to assist whilst an air ambulance attends to the incident on the opposite side.”
