The guilty plea to both federal charges represents the first time former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has publicly acknowledged his role in George Floyd’s death after he pleaded not guilty to the murder charges of George Floyd. state and exercised the right not to testify at the trial in April.

George Floyd’s brother Philonise Floyd told CNN in February that it was a sense of responsibility.

“For me, this is huge, because a green wall fell, and it never fell,” he said. “I feel better knowing that he will be held accountable for what is happening.”

Other family members said they believe Chauvin only pleaded guilty because he had no other choice.

Rodney Floyd, another brother of Floyd, said: “I still feel the same pain (and) anger as at the beginning, because he could have done this last year, starting this. on that day”. “So today it’s the same pain.”

Terrence Floyd, another brother, said hearing the guilty plea “made me feel in the end, you were responsible.”

“When he confessed, I knew he knew why,” he said. “The fact remains that he’s actually going to be in prison and he’s going to make time for what he’s done, so that’s good enough for me.”

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who led the state’s murder case against Chauvin, released a statement about the importance of pleading guilty.

“Today, Derek Chauvin accepted responsibility and admitted his guilt in open court, under penalty of perjury, for disenfranchising George Floyd and a boy, then 14 years old. This is it. important and historic. His joining marks another important moment in accountability and another step on the road to justice,” he said.

Chauvin was indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly using unreasonable force against a 14-year-old boy in 2017.

Ellison also thanked the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota and the Department of Justice for bringing the case.

“George Floyd’s life matters. It’s that young man’s life that matters. No one is above the law and no one is below it. While Floyd’s life is lost to his family and all of us. both of us, I hope Chauvin’s change of plea marks a new beginning for equality, Ellison said.
