Lively professionals and community helpers dominate the New Year’s titles

Experts leading the UK’s effort to combat the coronavirus pandemic, including the government’s most prominent advisers, once again dominated the New Year honors list.

In a separate announcement, the Queen has appointed former prime minister Tony Blair as a companion knight of the Noble Order of Garter, the highest order of knights, and one of those is her personal gift.

In the main honor. Professor Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England, and Sir Patrick Vallance, the government’s chief scientific adviser, will receive the KCB.

Dr Jenny Harries, chief executive of the UK Health Security Service, Dr June Raine, chief executive of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority, and Emily Lawson, former director commercial banks of NHS England, who have overseen much of the Covid-19 vaccine rollout, will be made up of DBEs.

Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, deputy chief medical officer for England, will be knighted, as will Frank Atherton and Gregor Smith, chief medical officer for Wales and Scotland.

About 200 people who have worked in their communities to help the public respond to the pandemic will also be honored. Including Tobias Weller, 11 and Max Woosey, 12 years old, who will receive BEMs for their fundraising efforts throughout the crisis and is one of the youngest recipients of the honor.

Business figures who will receive the title include Jan du Plessis, Nigel Wilson, Doug Oakervee, William Russell and Ian Livingstone, all of whom will be knighted, and Vivienne Cox, who will be made DBE.

Du Plessis, the former chairman of BT and miner Rio Tinto, was nominated by the government last week to be the new chairman of the UK accounting watchdog. Wilson is the chief executive officer of the financial services firm Legal and General, and Oakervee is the former chairman of the rail companies HS2 and Crossrail.

Russell was the last lord mayor of the City of London while Livingstone was already well known in the online gaming industry, including as a co-founder of Games Workshop.

Blair says he’s “extremely grateful to the Queen” for being appointed a knight of the Garter. Sir John Major is the only former prime minister to have been a member of the order.

Other appointments for the order announced Friday include Baroness Valerie Amos, a former UN secretary of international development and humanitarian coordinator, and the Duchess of Cornwall, wife of Prince Charles.
