Los Angeles Angels’ Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout Lead As MLB Announces All-Star Game Starters

In? Shohei Ohtani.

Outside? Yordan Alvarez.

At least in the American League’s starting lineup with the designated hitter for the July 19 All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium.

Alvarez, the Astros left-hander, leads the major tournaments in miss and miss percentage, hitting .312 / .410 / .665 with 26 home runs into the action on Friday, but Ohtani, the Angel’s two-way star, overtook him in the second round of fan voting to win the second consecutive starting mission in the All-Star Game. Last year, Ohtani was AL’s best player.

After the first round of voting, each position is narrowed down to two finalists, and a new round of voting will begin. Ohtani collected 52% of the vote to 48% for Alvarez, who is certain to be named a substitute when the rest of the team is announced on Sunday.

Ohtani is hitting the .257 mark with 18 home runs, but his pitching numbers are even better: 8-4 with 2.44 ERAs and 111 strikes in 81 innings. In his previous four starts, he hasn’t let any runs earned while hitting 40 hitters in 26 2/3 rounds. Despite another disappointing season from the Angels, Ohtani still has a chance to win a second consecutive MVP Award, thanks to his two-way performance.

His Angels teammates Mike Trout earned his 10th career choice. He will be joining the Yankees’ AL outfield Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. Judge leads the professional league with 30 home runs and 65 home runs, while Stanton has hit 21 home runs. This is the fourth All-Star pick for Judge and fifth for Stanton.

Stanton, who was born in Panorama City, California, about 20 miles north of Los Angeles, said it would mean a lot to him to play in an All-Star Game close to where he grew up.

“I don’t think it will fully absorb until I’m there, even after that,” Stanton said. “But for sure, it will be there with what is most memorable, if not most.”

Stanton said he has yet to decide whether he will take part in the Home Run Derby, but added that he is “definitely” looking into it.

Jose Altuve of the Astros earned his eighth All-Star pick and fifth start of the mission in second place, while Rafael Devers beat Jose Ramirez in the third base in the battle between two players has the season MVP-caliber.

Blue Jays Catcher Alejandro Kirk is the only first boot for AL.

In the National League, the closest race was at the third base, where the Padres’ Manny Machado pass the Cardinals’ Nolan Arenado with 51% of the vote to 49%. Shortstop is also a close vote, with the Dodgers’ Trea Turner defeat the braves’ Dansby Swanson 52% to 48%.

Bryce Harper was voted as the starting DH, but he will have to be replaced due to injury.

Marlins . Second Gunner Jazz Chisholm Jr. will be All-Star for the first time.
