Lukashenko provides the migrants staying at the border with food, clothing

KYIV – Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on Friday promised food and warm clothing to migrants who choose to stay on the border between the former Soviet Union country and Poland and will not return to their homeland.

Lukasenko made the pledge during a visit to a migrant reception facility at the border.

“My mission is to help you who are in trouble,” Lukashenko said, speaking to thousands of migrants during a visit to a migrant storage facility at the Bruzgi warehouse. “We Belarusians, myself included, will do whatever you want, even if it harms the Poles, the Latvians and someone else.”

“We will work with you to realize your dreams,” added Lukashenko.

Lukashenko’s visit comes after weeks of tension at the border, where hundreds of people are still stranded. Since November 8, a large group of people, mainly from the Middle East, have been trapped in Belarus at a border crossing with Poland, trapped as forces from the two countries confront each other. Most are fleeing conflict or a feeling of hopelessness at home, and are aiming for Germany or other Western European countries.

Lukashenko again urged Germany to accept migrants.

German government spokesman Steffen Seibert on Friday strongly rejected Lukashenko’s claims that Germany had agreed to take in 2,000 migrants currently in Belarus.

“It is not right for Germany to agree to this,” he told reporters in Berlin.

Videos and photos taken by local media show Belarus’ dictatorial leader surveying conditions in crowded migrant camps. Russia’s state news agency RIA Novosti reported that crowds of migrants greeted Lukashenko as he arrived.

Lukashenko said that in addition to about 2,000 people at the border facility, another 2,000 to 3,000 migrants are currently staying in Belarus. He promised the migrants that Belarusian authorities would help them return home – but only if they wanted to.

“In any case, we will detain you, tie your hands, load you on a plane and send you home if you don’t want it,” Lukashenko said.

Around 200 migrants still try to enter the EU illegally every day, Lukashenko said.

More than 170 people returned to the northern Kurdish region of Iraq on Friday with another return flight scheduled for later in the day. Last week, 430 Iraqis returned home after an unsuccessful attempt to reach the European Union.

The West accuses Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of luring thousands of migrants to Belarus with the promise of help to Western Europe to use them as pawns to destabilize the 27-nation European Union in retaliation. sanctions against his authoritarian government. Belarus denies the technicality of the crisis.
