Luke ‘Skywalker’ Lucyszyn and Bryan Young Identified as Two Americans Killed in Ukraine

Two Americans killed in fierce fighting with Russian forces in Ukraine have been identified, as more details surrounding the “ambush” are revealed.

Luke “Skywalker” Lucyszyn and Bryan Young were among a group of American, Canadian and Swedish citizens killed on July 18 in a surprise attack by Russian tanks in eastern Donetsk region.

The Ukrainian commander in charge of the foreign fighter squadron, Ruslan Miroshnichenko, confirmed the identities of the Americans along with Emile-Antoine Roy-Sirois of Canada and Edvard Selander Patrignani of Sweden. Three people were killed when Russian tanks fired on special operations forces, Miroshnichenko said Politico.

The group has been deployed to the village of Hryhorivka, two miles northeast of Siversk, where they are trying to halt the Russian advance by clearing a ravine where their forces are trying to cross.

“They did it successfully. But at the end of the mission they were ambushed by Russian tanks,” Miroshnichenko said.

According to social media posts by other foreign fighters, the group was preparing a defensive attack on the enemy infantry when the attack began. They refused to leave each other when injured and died together.

“The first shell wounded Luke. Three guys Edward, Emile and Bryan, they immediately tried to help Luke, give first aid and evacuate him from this place. Then the second bullet killed them all,” Miroshnichenko said.

According to a report obtained by Politico, as the group worked, they “came under heavy mortar fire from enemy artillery of 120 mm caliber and above and cluster shells.”

The victims were “all ferocious warriors with big hearts.”

In one Facebook postCorey Heffernan, who said he fought alongside the men in Ukraine, wrote: “My brothers have carried out many successful missions and proved their bravery countless times.”

Heffernan’s post also appeared to confirm the events leading up to the death: “Luke was severely wounded by the cannon and knocked unconscious. The brothers close to Luke’s position refused to back down and cheered each other on in the face of impending danger and forged ahead to help their brother. According to Heffernan, “Bryan is our best machine gunner, ruthless and fearless.”

An Instagram post by a Swedish foreign boxer said Luke Lucyszyn “always has something funny to add in every situation. We frequently imitated and satirized celebrities and dialects and often had to lift each other up in laughter and noise. He is our expert in weapons and a better soldier than many others. He is a genuine man who always takes care of his teammates. I will never forget him.”

Ten days before his death as he was about to head east, Bryan Young post on Facebook: “I often question why I am here. Well, this has been my job since 1988. I swore an oath to defend the free world.”

Last week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia was focusing more on its invasion of Ukraine in eastern Donetsk with the area already occupied by armed forces, but southern Ukraine also being a focus.

The US State Department confirmed the deaths of two Americans but did not provide names.
