Lush Cosmetics deactivates social media accounts

VANCOUVER –

Lush Cosmetics said it will deactivate its Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and Snapchat accounts on Friday in an effort to address consumers’ mental health challenges.

The company said the brand’s global presence across platforms will remain shut down until the platforms act to provide a safer environment for users.

Lush says it is investing in new ways to connect and can still be found on Twitter and YouTube today.

The company said it had previously tried this in 2019 with Lush’s UK channels, but said its resolve was bolstered by recent information.

Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen said Facebook prioritizes user engagement and growth over online safety.

Documents from the former Facebook data scientist show that the social media giant was aware of the harms their products caused and often did not or did nothing to mitigate them.
