Maine state trooper rescues man with Alzheimer’s from a ditch



Maine State Police are praising the actions of a soldier who searched and rescued an Alzheimer’s patient who had wandered from his home in Vassalboro. Shortly after their search began, a plowing truck driver in the town informed Trooper that he had seen a man walking around in freezing rain and snow. Soldier Harrington found the man in a ditch on Mudget Hill, Perry unable to walk. Harrington carried Perry back to the police cruiser, wrapping him in a jacket to keep him warm while he waited for an ambulance. Perry had severe hypothermia and frostbite. He was taken to Maine General Hospital in Augusta, where he is recovering.

State trooper Tyler Harrington answered a call about 82-year-old Bernard Perry going missing at around 5 a.m.

Shortly after their search began, a plowing truck driver in the town informed Trooper that he had seen a man walking around in freezing rain and snow.

Soldier Harrington found the man in a ditch on Mudget Hill, Perry unable to walk. Harrington carried Perry back to the police cruiser, wrapping him in a jacket to keep him warm while he waited for an ambulance.

Perry had severe hypothermia and frostbite. He was taken to Maine General Hospital in Augusta, where he is recovering.

Maine State Police released a video and description of the incident in a Facebook post.
