Man arrested after deadlock at U-Haul store in southern Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – 2:25pm Update: An hour-long standoff south of Wichita ended on Monday with a man in police custody.

Officers were called to the 1500 block of S. Broadway Monday afternoon to assist with the situation. Police said a man broke a window to enter the U-Haul store around 9 a.m. and took a key to get into one of the vans. Someone inside the business then called 911. When police arrived at the scene, they found the man in the truck.

The man drove the truck back and forth in the parking lot as crisis negotiators from the SWAT team tried to convince the man to get out. They gave him food, water and even cell phones to keep in touch. Police said they became aware early on that the man was unarmed and chose to use time and distance to de-escalate the situation.

Around 2:05 p.m., the man exited U-Haul and was knocked down by K-9 police and officers. He was taken to hospital for treatment for his bite wound but still faces charges including aggravated robbery.

Police say the suspect recently dealt with law enforcement when he stole a car and led Sedgwick County sheriffs in a brief chase. They also believe the man used drugs in Monday’s incident.

Hamilton Middle School, located at 1407 S. Broadway, is locked out as a precaution.

Apart from the injuries caused by the suspect, no one was injured.
