Man buys Civil War card and recognizes much of Washington County’s history

WASHINGTON Co., Iowa (KCRG) – What started as a way for Michael Huston of Wellman to fill his love of Civil War history has turned into an effort to preserve Washington County’s history.

Huston purchased a CDV card from a Washington County soldier who served in Company C; a group of about 100 soldiers all in Washington County. His wife’s great-grandfather served in Company C.

“I realized that the name they put on it had a number attached to it and believed it was part of a larger collection,” he said.

Huston contacted a seller who lives in Virginia and learned that the painting was one of many she was selling. They are part of a C Company collage assembled by John W. Morton. Morton also served in Company C along with Huston’s distant husband. Huston said Morton wanted to share the stories of those he served with. He paid what he said were thousands of dollars for a complete set.

“There are weeks or days left before it can be lost and taken apart,” says Huston.

After doing some restoration work and donating prints of the work to the Washington County Historical Society, Huston’s focus shifted to preserving the history for another 150 years and continuing Morton’s work to tell the story. of those who have served in Company C.

“I plan to research and learn as much as I can about their stories,” he said. “All are not different from us.”
