Man posing as UPS delivery man, children tied up in Bronx home burglary

MORRIS HEIGHTS, Bronx (WABC) – Police are hunting for a man posing as a UPS delivery worker and his accomplice in a Bronx home robbery in which four people, including two young children, tied up.

It happened around 5 p.m. Monday inside an apartment on Billingsley Terrace in the Morris Heights area, and authorities hope video surveillance of the attackers will lead to arrests.

Police said the 60-year-old female victim answered the door because what appeared to be a delivery man was holding a box.

The person at the door, who said he worked for UPS, was wearing a brown winter hat with the words “UPS” on the front.

When the victim opened the door, the person pushed her inside the apartment and revealed that he had a silver revolver inside the box.

After he gains entry, the second individual joins him.

With guns, they asked the woman, her 63-year-old husband Luis Valerio and their grandchildren, an 8-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl, to bind themselves with ropes.

Valerio said in Spanish: “They brought a box, but the box was empty. “And underneath the box, they had a gun and they went inside.”

These two men proceeded to take assets including two iPhones, an iPad and identification documents.

“The kids were with us, shouting, ‘Daddy!'” Valerio said. “They were scared. They are still traumatized today.”

The men also won access to a safe and a children’s piggy bank for $230, taking away a total of more than $7,500 in cash.

They then fled the apartment with the stolen property and cash.

Four victims were not injured.

“Thank God nothing happened,” Valerio said. “Nothing more than everything they took, papers, documents, everything.”

It’s not clear why the family was targeted.
