Manchester United are interested in signing Brighton defensive midfielder Moises Caicedo.
The 20-year-old Ecuadorian international has impressed in Brighton’s 2-1 win last weekend at Old Trafford when Graham Potter’s side beat new United manager Erik ten Hag in his first game in charge.
Caicedo only made his Premier League debut for Brighton at Arsenal in April, but has become a regular for Potter after their last 10 games and has made 12 appearances in all competitions for the club. club.
United are long-term admirers of Caicedo – they considered signing him when He joined Brighton from Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle in February 2021.
Brighton have no intention of selling the player. The club’s transfer policy is that they will only sell at the right time, at the right price.
Caicedo, whose contract with Brighton runs until the summer of 2025, also scored his first Premier League goal against United in stunning 4-0 win at Amex Stadium in May.
United will have internal discussions about whether to formalize their interest with an official bid.
After making his Seagulls debut in a League Cup win over Cardiff in August 2021, Caicedo spent the first half of last season on loan at Belgian side Beerschot before being recalled in January.
Caicedo is likely to be Ecuador’s key player at the World Cup in Qatar, having made 23 caps and scoring two goals for his country.
In October last year, he became the first player born in the 21st century to score in the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers, with the goal in Ecuador’s 4-2 win over Uruguay.
Caicedo’s interest comes amid waning optimism over the De Jong deal
Manchester United’s interest in Caicedo comes after optimism over signing the Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
United have yet to give up their hopes of signing De Jong as they feel Barca want to do a deal and have an extensive deal worth £72m.
United also believe the Dutch international wants to come but they know the potential move has dragged on much longer than they wanted or anticipated.
Sky Sports News have been told “the door is not yet closed” on a deal signed with De Jong – but “the confidence is not high” a transfer is possible.
United considered other options over the summer due to the problematic nature of the De Jong deal. Alternative options may need to be activated as soon as there are only 16 days left in the window.
Meanwhile, negotiations continue to progress with By Adrien Rabiot representative on personal terms regarding the French midfielder’s proposed move to United from Juventus.
A deal came to an end after the £15m deal was negotiated in principle, with the willingness of all parties to let the transfer go through.
United are interested in signing a striker this summer
United also remain in the market for a forward player, with PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo an interested player.
But United respect PSV’s participation in Champions League qualifying and are likely to pursue the 23-year-old in the final week of the season.
Stuttgart’s Sasa Kalajdzic is a player United are also looking at, with the Austrian potentially priced right as he enters the final year of his contract and wants to join United.
United have been offered the opportunity to sign Atletico Madrid Alvaro Morata with the former Chelsea striker’s interest in Ten Hag’s team.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is another striker who has come to United in talks with Barcelona, but their interest has dwindled further with Chelsea pushing to sign him.
Cristiano Ronaldo could be allowed to leave United this month if Ten Hag decides his departure will be better for the club in the future.
United’s position has not changed and Ronaldo is not for sale. He still has a year left on his contract and United have the option to extend it for another 12 months.
Sky Sports News reported on Monday that Atletico Madrid and Chelsea remain two possible destinations for Ronaldo should United change their stance and let him go.
However, there are senior figures at both clubs who do not believe they should sign Ronaldo.
