Mark Reuss says GM service centers are now working on Teslas
GM spent Investment Day 2022 in New York City tout how their EV investments over the past few years are starting to show results to come. presentation slides for car company president Mark Reuss advertisement the chevrolet Bolt is the number one electric vehicle on the mass market, plans to produce one million electric vehicles by 2025, “transparent VIN grade price” on a new digital retail platformand the arrival of the battery-powered Silverado pickup truck with a payload of 20,000 pounds drag capacity. A few more slides turn left into completely surprising territory: Reuss said GM seller service centers have made “11.180 repair above Teslas” as of 2021. Barron’s first report news.
Aside from the number and brand, almost everything else about the claim is unknown. Most importantly, we don’t know the nature of the repair and we suspect they weren’t too involved. Just like newer vehicles from legacy OEMs increasingly require proprietary and state-of-the-art diagnostic tools. ECU Under lockdown, it is said that complex fixes to Tesla’s powertrain require access to the automaker’s Garage Tools servers to get codes and run self-tests. And when even Tesla is having trouble procuring parts for its product line, there’s no reason to think. GM can or will. Tesla has started selling two register Service, repair, and diagnostic software last year. Maybe GM dealers were involved, but we’re just guessing. GM’s technology may be limited to fixes like suspension, brake work, rotating the tire and draining the fluid. GM did not respond to inquiries from various stores.
While Reuss calls the new breakthrough “a growing business for us,” the ancillary benefits are far more important than revenue right now. GM will wave “I told you so” when startup EV automakers can’t compete with a nationwide network of thousands of service centers. The majority of comments we read from Tesla owners scoff at the idea of taking their cars to a GM dealership for whatever reason. But one person commented at Teslarati Written“True story – a rock broke cooling water my inlet 3 . sample‘S the battery pack. Tesla’s solution? Replace the entire battery pack at a cost of $16,000. They even refused to provide an upgraded Model 3 battery pack. I got a legacy battery with a 300m range. I would welcome 3rd party repair shop like GM.” However, bragging is always a double-edged sword, another commenter wrote, “Let’s GM authorized dealer Repairing Teslas? I have one GMC Sierra Hybrid needs some work and I talked to all four of my guys local agent and were told with varying degrees of directness that they didn’t want to work with it. Perhaps one of the GM dealers who enjoy working on Teslas will also be willing to work on my GM product?”
Even better for GM, Tesla owners waiting for their car to be completed will likely stroll around the showroom to look at GM’s electrical products, which Reuss conceded.[is] a big deal for us.”
Tesla CEO Elon Musk perhaps too busy with his new social media network to worry about what a handful of Tesla owners are doing, but he knows the service issue is pressing. He tweeted in June of this year, “Working on Tesla North American service. The goal is two-thirds of cars get service within the day, no waiting.”
