“We expect pooled financing to increase a person’s level of dependence on their partner,” said Emily Garbinsky, associate professor of marketing and management.
Adjusting for the interests and (financial) goals of couples, interdependence theory states that they are associated with a high degree of relationship quality.
The researchers also found that couples with compounded financial accounts tend to show a better connection and their interactions are more positive, stable, and secure.
Future research in this area could help couples decide how to organize their finances to maximize relationship quality and ultimately improve their happiness.
