Marvel Actors “Not a Movie Star” – The Hollywood Reporter

Say “Marvel” again, we dare you!

Quentin Tarantino has become the latest established filmmaker to offer a humble critique of superhero movies, only to find his comment sent Hulk smashed on Twitter.

In an interview with Tom Segura for his podcast, 2 Bears 1 CaveTarantino was asked about what-should-be-absolutely-safe themes in Marvel movies.

“I don’t love them,” Tarantino said. “No I dont. I do not hate surname. But I don’t love them. I mean, listen, I used to collect Marvel comics like crazy as a kid. There’s an aspect where if these movies come out when I’m in my twenties, I’ll be completely happy and absolutely love them. [But] they won’t be the only movies made, they will be those movies among others. I’m almost 60 so I’m not very excited about them.”

Segura noted that the Marvel movies are often like a “carbon copy” of previous MCU movies, adding that “you’ll never be taken somewhere you weren’t expecting.”

“My only ax to sharpen is that they are the only thing that seems to be made,” said Tarantino. “And they’re the only things that seem to generate any kind of excitement in the fandom or even the studio that makes them… So the reality is that they’re all representative of the electric age as a whole. this photo right now. There really isn’t much room for anything else. It’s a my problem. It’s a matter of representation.”

“Part of the Marvelization of Hollywood is that you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters,” he added. “But they are not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Thor is the star. I’m not the first to say that. I think it’s been said a billion times, but it’s these franchise characters that become the stars.”

“Back in 2005, if an actor was starring in a movie as good as the Marvel movies, that guy was definitely a star,” he continued. “That means people dig him or her and they like them and want to see them in the content. Sandra Bullock participates Speed, velocity and people think she’s great in it. Everyone loves her… They are excited about Sandra Bullock and want to see her in another role. That is not the case now. We want to meet that guy [keep] play Wolverine or whatever.”

by Marvel Shang-Chi and the legend of Ten Rings star Simu Liu shoot back on Twitter: “If the only gatekeepers to becoming movie stars were from Tarantino and Scorsese, I would never have had the chance to do a $400 million+ movie. I admire their filmmaking genius. They are transcendental auteurs. But they can’t point their noses at me or anyone. No studio is perfect. But I’m proud to work with someone who has made a persistent effort to improve diversity on screen by creating heroes that empower and inspire people of all communities everywhere. . I also like ”’Golden Age”’.. but it’s as white as hell.”

Deadpool creator Robert Liefeld retweeted a story about Tarantino’s comment and ridicule it is (apparently) “the best of the best of the best.”

Scorsese also famously criticized Marvel movies, calling them “theme parks” and “not movie theaters”, prompting response from Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, among others.

Tarantino fans will probably point out that if the director wants more non-Marvel content that fans enjoy, he can do exactly that. But the famous director has announced he will be giving up directing with his upcoming tenth, though unwritten, film. Tarantino reconfirmed his retirement plans in the podcast.

“I think ten is a good number,” he said. “I am willing to bow my head off the stage and let them want more. Don’t mess up my portfolio with a bunch of old-fashioned old man movies… I’ve done everything I wanted to do.”
