Mayor Edmonton expects Alberta premier to respect local autonomy over COVID-19 rules

The mayor of Edmonton said he hopes Alberta Premier Jason Kenney will respect local autonomy when COVID-19 health restrictions are in place.

Amarjeet Sohi says he knows Kenney appreciates the unique authority and responsibility city leaders have and must exercise to keep residents safe.

Sohi’s comments were in response to Kenney’s announcement this week that the province would soon phase out vaccine passports and set a timeline for ending other public health restrictions by the end of this month.

The mayor said he worries the province is moving too fast, as Alberta is still in the Omicron wave of the pandemic.

If necessary, the city would consider imposing its own health restrictions, he said, which Kenney called for.

Kenney said his government is considering making changes to the law governing city powers when the house resumes operations in less than three weeks.
