McLaren F1 with unique headlights ready to be auction headlines

With Monterey Car week is coming, we are entering high season because of high dollars Auction. It was only last August when a 1995 McLaren F1 With just 242 miles on it, it set a record at Gooding & Co. pebble beach auction, selling for just under $20.5 million in all. And we all know that in the past year the price of old car has skyrocketed (OK, that’s a joke, we’re talking an F1 here). But seriously, what price guarantee is RM Sotheby’s for what they pay as “one in one” F1 heading to block August 18?

The “one-of-a-kind” aspect concerns the car’s headlight configuration. Sotheby’s says the 059 chassis out of 64 road cars built is the only F1 to leave the factory with a thinner headlight arrangement to increase production. The auction house says the headlights are F1’s Achilles heel: “When driving at night, the power of the stock headlights is very poor, not something one wants to compete with at 240 mph. ” This car aims to remedy that, with the interior headlights borrowed from a BMW car Z1. McLaren later fixed the problem in other F1s by swapping and improving the lights inside the original headlight housing, but still leaving this example as you see it today.

Now, is that enough to make this F1 truly unique? We will find out. The difference is very small, if you compare it with last year’s sale, F1 number 025, shown here:

Sotheby’s F1 silver is a car with two owners. (The original buyer owned the number 017 F1 but traded that F1 for this one in April 1998; the second owner has owned it for 10 years.) The car has less than 16,400 miles. , of course more than last time’s almost-not-even-sat-in example of the year. However, you don’t see one of these for sale every day. Mostly, in August every year.

Almost as interesting as the car itself is how Sotheby’s plans to sell it. F1 will be sold “along with” the Monterey lots, but instead of a public bid, it will be open to closed auctions, somewhat along the lines of Bring a Trailer and Cars & Bid of the World gender. Once you’ve submitted, the home’s sealed auction site will let you know where you rank. The minimum accepted increase for a single car bid in this stratospheric price bracket would be $50,000. Bidding will run for 48 hours starting at 4:00 p.m. PDT on Aug. 18. All in all, it’s not quite as thrilling as a full-blown live auction – but after that, a lot is possible. can happen and a lot of money can be brought in, in 48 hours.
