Meet Designer Yoni, of C’est D Size Inclusion Brands!


Every May, we celebrate Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Monthand for this we wanted to highlight Bigger Asian Creators The community is an essential and valuable voice and we’re excited to share our conversations with Doyeon Yoni Yu of the C’est EASY today.

We first discovered Yoni through her TikTok and immediately became the headlines for her designs by C’est D, as well as the message of the inherent power behind her content. She talks a lot about her experience as a person considered mid-size here in U.S.A (while considered plus size in her native Korea!)Social and family shame was a major aspect of her experience growing up, and most importantly – the way she released so much self-hatred to embrace herself in all its glory. his optical!

We recently had the opportunity to chat with Yoni via Zoom, and it was an interesting conversation. We talked about fashion including size, body positivityThe beauty standard of the Korean entertainment industry, and why not more voices from the AAPI community.

And of course we discussed her VERY size clothing line, C’est EASY (Available in sizes XXS – 6XL), and she was teasing the inspiration behind her spring/summer collection, out now!

Meet Yoni sized – fashion brands including C’est D!

A: How would you describe C’est D to someone who has never heard of your brand?

Y: I can say that the big motto of my brand is Inclusion & Diversity. Those are the two main goals of my brand – through fashion, of course. Fashion is an essential part of our lives. We feel most comfortable in our clothes in our daily lives.

My brand’s mission is to support and empower people to understand themselves as they are. This is quite difficult these days because social media sets a standard for being a certain image. I hope that my brand gives them a breakthrough so they can firmly become who they are.

A: agoraphobia and under-representation of size are quite common, but I feel there is a big difference especially in the Asian community. There isn’t an infinite amount of representation plus the colossal size there. Why do you think so? And why don’t you think more people are empowered to be a beacon of change like you are?

Y: Certainly if I compare my childhood with today, Asian society is gradually supporting change but it is not enough. They are still very strict in enforcing unrealistic body standards (Like the “Idol” image). It has been fixed for a long time, it is difficult to break the mold. Compared to Western cultures, Asian cultures tend to view society as a group. If you’re not in this group, you’re a black sheep and they don’t want to hang out with you.

In America I feel you are different or unique, people want to look at you and test you and they are less likely to exclude you. This is how the Body Positive and Empowerment movement was received. It’s happening in Asia, but the majority of the audience doesn’t seem to want to accept that.

Based on my personal experience in Korea, K-Pop idols and Korean celebrities follow a very strict body image. You must have a certain physique to be successful. I feel like there’s an important thing missing. If they show more diversity in their bodies, those with larger sizes in Asian countries will feel empowered to stand up and be seen.

A: When you created your TikTok, did you intend to be this voice for body positivity and inclusion? Or was it merely a happy accident?

Y: I create TikTok to primarily market my brand. But in creating that content, I shared my experience living in Korea and people really started to notice that and relate to it.

It popped into my brain that I’m not the only one having these experiences. I wish I had someone like that when I was younger, and I think I can keep talking about these things to energize them and show them that they’re not alone.

A: How do you think your work at C’est D has evolved since the brand’s inception?

Y: OH. It’s a very complicated question (laughs). When I first started the brand. I have planned to develop and expand it slowly. That’s why I set a limited size range (XL – 3X) for more management workload.

After that debut, I decided to go our separate ways. I increased the size range to 6XL, which is a huge leap for me. I was a little scared, but I made it. Since then, I have expanded from XXS to 6XL. My future plan is to show more design diversity. I hope I can create many different designs in the future.

A: What inspires your aesthetic? For me, when it comes to your brand, that definitely gives me great interest.”Know nothing“Vibes: Skater, Punk, Preppy, Party and Glamorous!

Y: Everything I wanted to wear in the past and everything I want to wear now. Growing up, studying fashion and working in the fashion industry, there was always a void that I wanted to fill. That is the main focus of my brand.

I want to sew clothes in different styles that I want to wear. I really wanted to bring that dynamism and variety into my brand so my audience could shop and they could find things to wear for every occasion.

A: One of your favorite TikToks is you doing the Beyonce drop challenge to show how stretchy and comfortable your bottom is. When shopping for clothes, it is a concern for many people about the plus size, especially when shopping for bottoms. I love that you’ve thought this through and have found an effective way to showcase your fashion in a fun, engaging way!

Y: I try to show my designs in different ways and then show how the designs work, because those are the factors that you consider when shopping. I try to be as transparent as possible, because that’s how I like to shop!

A: Last year, you launched a collection during NY Fashion Week, which you’ve been documenting a lot on TikTok and social media, giving us a behind-the-scenes look at everything. takes place in this process. Can you tell us more about your experience and share if you plan to do it again this year?

Y: Fashion week is definitely a lot of pressure and lots of things big and small to do. That’s a lot to handle. It has become a major milestone for my brand as it was the first show where I displayed things that I sold. In previous fashion shows, I showed a piece that was a show. More fashion items that you will hesitate to wear in your daily life. The former program has more accessible and affordable sections. I feel closer to my audience and that means a lot to me.

A lot of people were supportive and happy about it, but I noticed that one of my casual pieces went viral on Twitter because people were judging and scorning oversized models. The funny thing is that no one talks badly about smaller models wearing similar things.

I realize we have a long way to go and this is why we must continue to push body diversity on the runway. Fashion models should represent us and I hope that there are more young designers out there who can help bring about change to open up more eyes.

I won’t be performing at New York Fashion Week this year. Instead, I’m trying to build on my recently released Spring/Summer collection, and maybe next year I’ll launch again with more Avant Garde designs.

A: What is inspiring you now? What trends do you want to follow? What excites you when it comes to the design process?

Y: Y2K vibes. I love it, but I don’t want to do it the obvious way. So I’m trying to figure out how I want to explore it. Lots of different fabrics and textures coming soon. Things I like to design and I care about change on a daily basis.

A: That’s great, I think you’ll never run out of ideas!

Y: Yes, it is a well that never dries. I have a lot of ideas I want to work on, but I’ll do it little by little.

A: Finally, we talked a bit about social media phobia and the rumors, misinformation, and reviews that petite creators experience. You are certainly no stranger to that. What motivates you to keep going despite the amount of hate on your content?

Y: People tell me that having a clothing brand that includes a size is “promoting obesity” or “promoting an unhealthy lifestyle.” People of all sizes need clothes and they deserve clothes to feel good… anywhere in their narcissistic journey.

Size doesn’t matter – we all need clothes to wear. We can’t walk around naked. It’s really simple logic: no matter what size you are, you need clothes to go to school or work.

A: Absolutely, clothing is a tool of self-expression and every size deserves that right to express themselves through fashion!

Y: No one wants to wear ugly clothes when they are on a journey of self-love. Feeling cute or beautiful is very important. That’s the biggest motivator and nice clothes help with that. Obesity is not a motivator. It does nothing but bring people down.

That’s the stereotype that I want to break. Everyone deserves the right to dress the way they want!
