Melbourne City goalkeeper attacks | CTV News

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA –

An A-League football match between rivals Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory was called off on Saturday after fans flooded the pitch and attacked City goalkeeper Tom Glover.

Video on social media showed a fan throwing a metal bucket of white substance at Glover, who was taken off the field in shock and bleeding. Team officials said he may have suffered a concussion but had no immediate information on his condition.

Match referee Alex King was also injured, having his head slashed in the same incident.

Fans from the Melbourne Victory area of the stadium flocked to the pitch after just 20 minutes of the game at AAMI Stadium. City led 1-0 when the game was paused.

“Following shocking scenes during the first half of the Men’s A-League match between Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City … as fans from the Melbourne Victory FC team entered the field, Football Australia match officials were quoted as saying. cancel the match … in order to protect the integrity of the match,” a statement from Football Australia said.

“Such behavior has no place in Australian football, with a full investigation by Football Australia starting immediately,” with “strong sanctions to be introduced.”

There was a tense atmosphere at the start of the match with both groups of fans planning to leave the match after 20 minutes to protest against the Australian Professional League, which recently awarded the next three finals to Sydney in an agreement with the New South Wales state government.

Both groups of fans started making offensive words right after the previous Women’s A-League match ended. Victory and City fans also held up banners, expressing their displeasure with the APL and its decision on championship games.

Both groups of fans threw flares onto the field, but the situation escalated when a flare appeared and hit a TV cameraman. Glover then picked up another flare on the ground and threw it back into the stands.

Then the fans rushed into the field and Glover was hit by a metal bucket used to set off flares. Glover began bleeding from his head wound and was taken off the field with players from both teams.

Former Australia goalkeeper Danny Vukovic wrote on Twitter: “Our game was ruined… an absolute disgrace for what happened tonight. The damage is irreparable. Darkest day for Australian football.”

The incident comes two weeks after Australia reached the round of 16 at the World Cup in Qatar before losing 1-2 to Argentina.

Veteran Australian football journalist Ray Gatt responded to a Twitter comment by saying: “As a football writer I have covered Australian football for over 40 years and have seen many peaks highs and crippling lows. This is the lowest of all lows. Very sad.”
