Mercedes, Stellantis cooperate with US company on new batteries

BERLIN –

Carmakers Mercedes-Benz and Stellantis announced an agreement with US firm Factorial Energy on Tuesday to help develop solid-state battery technology that they hope could make electric cars attractive. more attractive to the mass market.

Mercedes-Benz, a division of Daimler AG, says it is working with Factorial, based in Woburn, Massachusetts, to jointly develop batteries with the aim of testing prototype cells early next year. It said it was “investing a high double-digit multimillion-dollar sum in Factorial” that would empower a representative on the battery company’s board of directors.

Stellantis, which combines PSA Peugeot and Fiat Chrysler, said it has signed a joint development agreement with Factorial and is making a “strategic investment” in the company. It did not detail the size of the investment.

Solid-state batteries have a solid conductive material instead of the liquid electrolyte found in most lithium-ion batteries today. They can store more power, extend range, or allow smaller batteries to be used.
