Mesquite, Texas, police officer shot dead while responding to disturbance
At 1:40 p.m. Friday, police said officers were dispatched to a riot area near a grocery store on the 1500 block of S. Beltline.
“During the investigation, the officer was shot, and a male suspect was also shot. Both were taken to a local hospital, and the officer struggled with his injuries,” police said. Mesquite said in a post with their official. Facebook Page.
The officer was assaulted twice, and the suspect was assaulted once, Mesquite Sheriff David Gill, speak.
“This is a senseless act of violence that has torn a loving father and husband from his family,” said Sheriff Gill, swallowing tears in his eyes. “He’s a 21-year veteran of the Mesquite police department. He’s a good man, a good friend, a good officer.”
Suspect remains in critical condition, according to CNN affiliate WFAA.
The WFAA quoted witnesses as saying they heard about four to six gunshots and were shocked because they felt the area was normally safe.
