Messi’s World Cup Instagram photo breaks egg record for likes
Newly crowned World Cup champion Lionel Messi has set another record-breaking feat: gaining the most likes on an Instagram post.
More than 61.6 million people liked Monday’s Instagram post by Messi celebrating Argentina’s World Cup final victory.
The post features several photos of Messi holding the World Cup trophy above his head, celebrating with teammates and waving to fans. Argentina beat France in a close match in which captain Messi scored two of his team’s three goals before they won the penalty shootout.
“THE CHAMPION OF THE WORLD!!!!!!!” Messi writes in Spanish in the caption. “I’ve dreamed it so many times, I want it so much that I still… can’t believe it.”
The previous Instagram record was held by a photo of an egg. That photo was posted on the world_record_egg account with the stated goal of surpassing 18 million likes on the Instagram post of Kylie Jenner, the record holder at the time.
The egg currently has 56.7 million likes.
Previous records for the most liked photo on Instagram, according to Guinness World Records, include Beyonce Knowles-Carter’s pregnancy announcement about her pregnancy in 2017 and posts by people with Famous influences include Kylie Jenner’s younger sister, Kendall Jenner, and half-sister Kim Kardashian.
Another soccer star recently set an Instagram record when Cristiano Ronaldo, the most followed celebrity on the platform, hit 500 million followers after posting a Louis Vuitton ad featuring him and his girlfriend. Messi plays chess. Messi has 403 million followers.
Messi has long been considered one of the greatest players of this generation, but the World Cup title eluded him until this year. Before the tournament, he said that this would probably be his last chance to win the World Cup.
