Just a day after the lights went out on another edition of New York Fashion Week, and MTV Video Music Awards Taking over Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, the most famous faces of pop culture have come to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to celebrate fashion’s party of the year: the Met Gala.
Usually held on the first Monday in May (it has been postponed to 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic), the star-studded annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute heralds the opening of the exhibition. museum banner fashion show – this year, In America: A Book of Fashion.“Opening to the public September 18, this is the first half of a two-part exhibition that explores how the storytelling and aesthetics of American fashion have evolved from the 1940s to the present, through about 100 historical and contemporary clothing sets.

But tonight the focus is on the steps of the Met, where A-list actors, supermodels, drag TV queens, musicians and athletes are walking cream carpets in their best designer outfits.

This year’s co-chairs reflect not only the diversity of the invite list, but also its collective star power: Timothée Chalamet, Naomi Osaka, Billie Eilish and newly inaugurated poet Amanda Gorman presiding over the ceremony, along with seats of honor Anna Wintour, Tom Ford and Instagram head Adam Mosseri.
Before the event, Wintour told CNN Style via email that American fashion in 2021 has become “a patchwork of pieces, reflecting the world we all live in, seen through many different lenses.”

Adding to the patchwork, Vogue’s editor-in-chief ditched her usual Chanel and donned a floral Oscar de la Renta dress – a tribute to the late designer, a close friend and a passionate gardener.

Meanwhile, Gorman told CNN Style that American fashion is “varied, vibrant, beautiful, and alternating.” As she stepped forward, she said, “I think American fashion is really at the crossroads of the world.”

The poet wears an embroidered indigo dress by Vera Wang, with a jewel-encrusted laurel crown and a book-shaped clutch decorated with the words “Give me your fatigue” – all are all related to the Statue of Liberty.

With typical indifference, Timothée Chalamet walked in the door in a miniature white satin jacket and white Haider Ackerman trousers – tucked into a pair of white Converse sneakers. Underneath, he wears a Rick Owens layer.

Dressed in Oscar de la Renta, Billie Eilish serves up Old Hollywood glamor in the style of Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly. Her classic peach-pink dress comes with a fitted bodice and the tulle needs the assistance of four helpers.

Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney of New York didn’t emphasize her words with a bold look with “equal rights for women” written down the length of the back shoulder board.

Rapper Saweetie wore a figure-hugging dress, studded with train crystals by Christian Cowan. The design combines the colors of the Black American Heritage flag and the flag of the Philippines – a reference to her mixed heritage. Similarly, Naomi Osaka has brought her Japanese and Haitian background together in a Louis Vuitton garment. Ruffled sleeves evoke carnival, while the red obi on her tulip dress is reminiscent of a traditional kimono tie.
