Meteor streaks in the sky of Vancouver Island

A space show lit up both the skies over Vancouver Island as well as social media on Sunday night.

People started reporting that they saw what they believe to be a meteor trail over the south-facing island around 5pm Some believe it may have actually crashed into a mountain near Port Alberni.

Michelle Dick was in Port Alberni in a turkey dinner fleet and was posting live updates on Facebook about the event when a meteor passed overhead.

“I entertained people and it was more than I expected,” she said.

Dick believes the celestial event occurred around 5:40 p.m. and was witnessed by others in the lineup around her. But, no one else has captured the subject on the video.

Dick said: “It’s crazy. The camera on my phone isn’t great but in fact it’s so impressive, it’s like a very big big fireball.”

Her recollection of the timing of the event differs from that of Sean Mark in Campbell River, who captured a subject parallel to his route along the South Island Highway in the Willow Point area.

His dash cam shows a meteor appearing in the cloudless sky above the Campbell River and then descending to the island. His post on Facebook said it was “the best thing ever.”

The timestamp on his video shows 5:23pm, but in another online post he estimates it to be at 5:01pm

Maya Cotton told CTV News she was in a hot tub with friends when a bright orange, green, blue and white light went from east to west above them in North Saanich.

Cotton said two minutes later they heard a loud bang and rumble.

The meteor cotton actually appeared to make a rumbling noise as it passed their view, Cotton said.

The difference in meteors’ timing and actions could come from the possibility that people are seeing different meteors.

According to NASA, we’re currently in the midst of peak observations for the Geminid meteor shower that occurs this time of year.

Watts believes the meteorite she spotted is heading south and she saw social media posts that it may have hit Arrowsmith Mountain, even though the meteor she saw was far away.

Despite that, she was happy to be able to watch the event.

“To see it on video and really just see it, it’s amazing to see and it’s a clear blue sky,” she said. “It’s so clear that it’s amazing to see.”
