Mexican zoo director kills, cooks animals

MEXICO CITY –

Authorities say the former director of a zoo in southern Mexico killed four of the zoo’s dwarf goats and served them to a Christmas party.

Jose Ruben Nava was replaced as the director of the local zoo in Chilpancingo on January 12 following the death of a deer there.

But officials said Tuesday that an investigation had found several animals in the zoo’s collection that were believed to have been sold, traded or eaten on Nava’s orders.

The state environment department said a zebra was exchanged for tools and Watusi deer and cattle were exchanged for individuals without proper accounting.

It is unclear whether Nava has been formally charged in the case or if he has an attorney.

But the most shocking accusation was made by Fernando Ruiz Gutierrez, director of the wildlife department of the state environment department. He said Nava killed four male dwarf goats from the zoo and cooked them for a year-end party.

Ruiz Gutierrez said: “These four animals were slaughtered and cooked in the zoo premises, and served as food at the end of the year party.

“This endangers the health of those who eat them, because these animals are unfit for human consumption,” he said.

Nava is also alleged to have traded in the zoo’s zebras for some of the tools needed to repair things around the zoo, but an inspection did not find any such tools at the facility. .
