MG HS 2023 price and specifications

The MG HS has entered 2023 unchanged, although a cosmetic update is due later this year.

The company has yet to reveal any details about the upcoming upgraded lineup for the Australian market. However, MG has revealed the new model in Chinese, UK and Thailand market.

MG Australia said it had “significantly reduced” four-wheel drive version number of the current model it is importing into the country, which suggests that the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine may not be used.

For now, though, it’s still on the price list alongside the base 1.5-liter turbocharged hybrid engine and plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Price has been increased at the beginning of this year, with MG announcing a $1000 increase in basic Vibe and premium Essence X and Plus EV Essence. All other models are priced unchanged.

MG first started production of the MG HS in 2018 and it initially arrives in Australia in 2020 with just the turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine.

The range was later expanded to include all-wheel drive and plug-in hybrid options, among other new variants.

MG currently offers eight variants, with the range opening at $32,990 driving for the base Vibe.

Last year, MG Australia sold 10,948 HS SUVs thanks to ample supply. It sells better GWM Haval H6 (7009), Honda CR-VA (8123), Nissan X-Trail (7943) and Volkswagen Tiguan (2658).

MG Australia offers three powertrain options.

MG HS Vibe, Excite and Essence have one 1.5 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine manufacture 119kW power and 250Nm of torque. It’s mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.

Excite X and Essence X models get one 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine manufacture 168kW power and 360Nm of torque. It is mated to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with all-wheel drive.

The flagship MG HS Plus EV uses one 1.5 liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine combined with a single electric motor on the front axle and a 16.6kWh lithium-ion battery.

The total system output is 189kW power and 370Nm of torque.

The claimed combined cycle fuel economy for the 2023 MG HS is 7.3L/100km in models with a 1.5-liter engine, 9.5L/100km with 2.0 liter engine and 1.7L/100km in HS Plus EV.

The plug-in hybrid offers an all-electric range of 63 km and takes five hours to charge using a 7kW AC power source.

All models require 95RON premium unleaded fuel and have a 55L fuel tank.

MG HS Vibe, Excite and Essence scale in 2023 4574mm long, 1876mm wide, 1664mm tall with a 2720mm The standard long.

Excite X and Essence X models are slightly taller 21mm but otherwise the measurement is the same as the base model.

The luggage space of the MG HS is 463Lincrease to the maximum 1287L with the second row folded. The plug-in hybrid models have 451L and 1275L space respectively, and lose the space-saving spare part to replace the tire repair kit.

Curb weight is 1489kg for the Vibe, while the rest of the models with the 1.5-liter engine weigh 1550kg. 2.0 liter models with weight 1700kg and heavy plug-in hybrid models 1775kg.

Service and Warranty

MG Australia offers customers a seven-year, unlimited-kilometer warranty. The HS Plus EV also includes a seven-year, unlimited-kilometer battery warranty for private buyers.

Maintenance is required 12 months or 10,000km, whichever comes first, with ten years of bare-bones maintenance.

Safety

MG HS was tested by ANCAP in 2019 and received certification five stars Rating.

That ranking is based on a score of adult protection of 92%, child protection of 83%, pedestrian protection of 64% and safety assistance of 77%.
