OXFORD, MICH. – A 15-year-old boy accused of shooting at his Michigan high school, killing four students and injuring seven others, appeared in court Monday for a due process hearing.
Ethan Crumbley is charged as an adult with murder, terrorism and other charges in the November 30 shooting at Oxford High School, about 30 miles (50 km) north of Detroit.
The purpose of Monday’s hearing is to prepare for the next hearing, which takes place on December 20, at which the judge will hear evidence and decide if there is enough evidence to bring Crumbley to trial. or not. There is a possibility that the case could be adjourned if his attorney seeks a mental capacity test.
“In a case like Crumbley, the main topics covered would likely be: the exchange of discovery and the timing of that exchange; whether the preliminary examination was conducted on the scheduled date, whether it was exempt or whether it will be adjourned to a new date; and binding,” said a spokesman for the Oakland County prosecutor’s office.
The Associated Press left an email on Friday seeking comment from Crumbley’s attorney.
Crumbley’s parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, were charged with non-intervention on the day of the tragedy and charged with involuntary manslaughter and arrested.
On the morning of the shooting, school officials met with Ethan Crumbley and the boy’s parents at the school after a teacher found drawings of a gun, a bullet, and a person who appeared to have died. was shot, along with a note that read: “My life is useless” and “The world is dead.”
The superintendent said the Crumbleys “flatly refused” to bring their son home.
Prosecutors said the gun used in the shooting had also been purchased by James Crumbley a few days earlier and that their son had full access to it.
