Microsoft’s Switch Development Cycle, May Release Windows 12 in 2024: Report

Microsoft is said to be moving to a new development schedule for Windows. The company is expected to return to its traditional three-year cycle, meaning the next major version could be released in 2024. This version could be Windows 12 if the company chooses to stick with it. its current naming trends, according to the report. Microsoft is also expected to double down on the release of new features for the current version of Windows. The company recently finalized the 22H2 update for Windows 11, which is expected to arrive sometime in September or October.

According to one report by Windows Central, Microsoft likely to release the next major version of Windows – supposedly Windows 12 – in 2024. The company reportedly scrapped the expected 2023 version of Windows 11, codenamed ‘Sun Valley 3’, to adopt this new schedule. Just a year ago, Microsoft announced that it plans to release a major feature update for Windows 11. It now plans to ship major versions of Windows every three years, according to the report.

Between major releases, Microsoft may plan to increase the rollout of features for the latest version of Windows. Starts with soon to be released Windows 11 version 22H2 (Sun Valley 2), it is supposed to introduce new features up to four five times a year. In the past, most Microsoft development teams had to wait for an annual release to roll out new features. But for now, these teams are expected to be able to reveal these features sooner. Microsoft is said to have tested this ‘Moment’ approach earlier this year when it included Taskbar improvements with some other features. It is now expected to bring some new features from ‘Sun Valley 3’ that were purposely dropped like the aforementioned ‘Moments’ update for ‘Sun Valley 2’.

Not much information is available regarding the 2024 version of Windows. Rumor has it that the developers have named this version the ‘Next Valley’ client. Microsoft has yet to officially confirm the existence of this version.
