‘Mindhunter’, ‘The OA’ and ‘Them’ Writer Are 57 Years Old – The Hollywood Reporter
Dominic Orlando, a playwright turned television writer and producer who has worked on shows Nightflyers, Mind Hunter, OA and Surname, died November 17 in Washington of complications from cancer, a CAA spokesman announced. He is 57 years old.
Born in Brooklyn on Christmas Day 1963, Orlando co-founded the New York-based Pantsless Stage Company, whose mission was to return theater to its “original role as a place where society confronts self his spiritual fall” in 1992.
During Jerome and McKnight’s fellowship at the Playwrights Center in Minneapolis, he helped found another theater company, Workhaus Collective, before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career in television.
Twice nominated for WGA, Orlando has contributed to 10 episodes of the Netflix horror series OA in two seasons 2016 and 2019; wrote an episode of David Fincher Mind Hunter at Netflix in 2017; produced six parts in 2018 by Syfy’s Nightflyers, based on the work of George RR Martin; and wrote three episodes of the Amazon series Surname This year.
Most recently, he took on the role of scriptwriter and executive producer for the upcoming series Outer range at Amazon and Withdraw at FX.
Survivors include his mother, Lillian; brothers John and Steven; and sister-in-law Sara.
Donations in his memory can be made to the Dominic Orlando Foundation, created by friends and the Playwrights Center, to support writers.
“He’s someone everyone wants to sit next to at Thanksgiving, at lunches in Minneapolis, and at a backyard barbecue in LA,” his family said in a statement. “He was the loudest, arguing, talking, making his point clear, yet somehow he was always trying to be a sympathetic and a good listener. A mentor, a friend, and a deeply generous soul, he has dedicated his life to building social circles the way he builds stories, and he is the heart. of every circle”.
