Minnesota AG Keith Ellison Mulls Criminal Charges Against SWAT Officer Mark Hanneman Who Killed Amir Locke

Authorities in Minnesota may indict a SWAT officer over Amir Locke’s death Wednesday, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced.

Freeman’s office will work with Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison to review the case, after which they will jointly determine, “based on the law and evidence, whether criminal charges should be filed.” , Freeman said in a statement released early Friday.

Locke was sleeping at home when the police stormed his apartment under a restraining order. He appeared to be asleep, but appeared to be holding a gun, when he was shot.

Officer Mark Hanneman has been identified by the city of Minneapolis as the man who fired the fatal shot that killed Locke.

“We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Mr. Locke’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” said Freeman, adding that “there will be no further comment.”
